Doctors, now you can use your iPhone or iPod touch to calculate your patients’ Risk of Recurrence for GastroIntestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST). This interactive tool will quickly show you the risk of disease recurrence based on three factors: tumor size, mitotic rate and site.

Tumor size is the sum of the longest diameters of target lesion, as defined in RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors). Mitotic rate is measured by the pathologist as the number of mitoses per 50 high power fields. GISTs can occur anywhere along the GI tract, and tumor site is often confirmed upon appropriate imagine or surgery. Tumor site is helpful to note; for example, small tumors localized to the intestine are more aggressive than gastric tumors of equal size and mitotic count. Be sure to consider additional prognostic factors when assessing patients’ risk of recurrence.
